How to Use Private Health Insurance for Counselling Sessions

How to Use Private Health Insurance for Counselling Sessions

For many people, taking the step to begin counselling is a meaningful investment in their wellbeing. What’s often less well known is that your private health insurance may help cover part of the cost—making support more accessible and sustainable over time.

At Sunny Coast Counselling, we’re registered with a range of private health funds, which means eligible clients may be able to claim rebates for their sessions.

How Private Health Insurance Can Help

If you have private health insurance with “Extras” cover (sometimes called ancillary cover), your policy may include benefits for counselling services.

This means:

  • You pay for your session upfront
  • You then claim a rebate back from your health fund
  • Your out-of-pocket cost is reduced

The exact rebate will depend on your individual policy—each fund and level of cover is different.

Health Funds We Work With

Sunny Coast Counselling is registered with the following health funds:

Australian Regional Health Group (ARHG)
ARHG is a network that includes several funds, such as:

  • Police Health
  • Emergency Services Health
  • Phoenix Health
  • St Lukes Health
  • GMHBA
  • CUA Health (telehealth only)
  • Teachers Union Health
  • AIA
  • Westfund

We are also registered with:

  • BUPA
  • AHM
  • Medibank
  • HCF

If you’re a member of any of these funds, there’s a good chance you may be eligible to claim a rebate.

How to Claim Your Rebate

The process is usually straightforward:

  1. Check Your Cover
Contact your health fund or log into your member portal to confirm:
    • That counselling is included in your Extras cover
    • How much you can claim per session
    • Your annual limits
  2. Attend Your Session
Pay for your counselling session as normal.
  3. Submit Your Claim
Use your health fund’s app, online portal, or in some cases, claim in person.
You’ll typically need a receipt, which we will provide.
  4. Receive Your Rebate
Your fund will reimburse part of the session fee directly to you.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Rebates vary depending on your level of cover
  • Annual limits may apply
  • Not all policies include counselling, so it’s worth checking first
  • Telehealth sessions may have specific conditions (particularly with some funds)

Why This Matters

Accessing counselling support is an important step toward improving your mental and emotional wellbeing. Knowing that part of the cost may be covered can make it easier to prioritise your care and stay consistent with sessions.

If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible to claim, we’re always happy to point you in the right direction or answer general questions about the process.
