Hello, I’m John Belchamber, a counsellor and clinical supervisor based on the Sunshine Coast. I offer counselling for individuals and couples, clinical supervision, Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), and wellbeing training.
I see clients in person on the Sunshine Coast, and online (via Zoom or Teams) and by phone across Australia and New Zealand.
Before becoming a counsellor, I spent over 28 years in people development, working in training, coaching, consulting and psychometric profiling. That experience still shapes how I work today. I’m a registered member of the Australian Counselling Association.
How I work
I believe a strong, trusting relationship between client and counsellor is at the heart of good counselling. My aim is to offer a nurturing, non-judgemental, safe space where you can work through life’s challenges and move towards the life you choose.
My role is to sit with you, understand where you are today and help you work out where you’d like to be. Once that’s clear, I’ll help you draw on the strengths and resources you already have, and build any new skills you need along the way.
I take a pluralistic approach, which means I tailor the counselling to you rather than fitting you to a single method. I draw on:
- Person-Centred Counselling, which builds on your own strengths and puts you in charge of the direction of our work
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps you handle difficult thoughts and feelings more flexibly, so you can focus on what matters most to you
- Solution-Focused Therapy, which looks at your present and future, and the skills and resources you already have to reach your goals
Clinical supervision
As well as counselling, I provide individual and group clinical supervision. I particularly enjoy working with counsellors who are starting out in, or growing, a private practice, and those who provide or would like to provide EAP support.
