Is Your Business Prepared to Support Your Employees’ Mental Health?

If you run a business on the Sunshine Coast and you’ve been wondering whether an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is something you need — or even what one actually is — you’re not alone.

EAP is one of the most misunderstood and underutilised workplace support tools available to Australian businesses. Many owners assume it’s only for large corporations with dedicated HR departments. The reality is quite different. EAP is accessible, affordable, and arguably more important for small and medium-sized businesses, where the impact of a struggling employee is felt immediately and directly by the whole team.

Why workplace mental health matters now

Mental health conditions are the leading cause of long-term workers’ compensation claims in Australia. According to Safe Work Australia, they result in a median of 34.2 working weeks off work per claim — more than four times the median for physical injuries. And that’s before we factor in presenteeism: employees who are physically at their desks but mentally disengaged, which research consistently shows costs businesses even more than absenteeism.

The good news is that early, professional support works. Peer-reviewed research has found that employees who access EAP services show significantly greater reductions in both absenteeism and presenteeism than those who don’t (Attridge, 2015, EASNA Research Notes).

Your legal obligations also extend further than many employers realise. Under Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, the duty of care for your employees includes their psychological health and safety — not just physical hazards. An EAP is a recognised and proactive way to meet that obligation.

What’s inside the guide

We’ve written a free, practical guide specifically for Sunshine Coast businesses — whether you have five staff or five hundred. It’s designed to cut through the jargon and give you straightforward, honest information.

The guide covers:

  • What EAP actually is — and what it isn’t. Hint: it’s not a hotline or a call centre.
  • The business case — including the research on absenteeism, presenteeism, and return on investment.
  • Your legal obligations as an employer under Australian WHS law.
  • A self-assessment questionnaire to help you work out whether EAP is right for your organisation right now.
  • What to look for in an EAP provider — the questions worth asking before you sign anything.
  • What Sunny Coast Counselling offers — our approach, our services, and how we work with local businesses.

Why local matters

Most EAP providers are large, national organisations. Your employees call a generic number, wait for a callback, and often speak to a different counsellor each time. There’s no ongoing relationship, no local knowledge, and no continuity of care.

At Sunny Coast Counselling, we do things differently. We’re a local practice offering professional, confidential EAP services to businesses across the Sunshine Coast. Our counsellors use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). We offer face-to-face sessions locally, as well as online and telephone sessions for employees who prefer flexibility or work remotely.

Your employees get real support from a real person they can build a relationship with. You get clear, de-identified reporting and a service tailored to your business.
