Psychological Safety in Teams

Psychological Ssafety in Teams Cover

A practical guide for managers and team members on building cultures where people can speak up, take risks, and do their best work

Psychological safety is one of the most significant and well-evidenced concepts in contemporary team and organisational research. Yet for many managers and team members, it remains something of a buzzword — a term that sounds positive but whose practical meaning is unclear.

This guide cuts through the jargon. It explains what psychological safety actually is (and what it is not), why it matters, how to assess it honestly in your own team, what gets in the way, and — most importantly — what you can do about it.

It is written for two audiences:

  • Managers and team leaders who want to build more effective, learning-focused teams
  • Team members who want to understand the dynamics of their team and contribute to a healthier culture

Each chapter includes both information and practical tools. The assessment instruments in Chapter 3 are designed to be used individually and, where appropriate, collectively as a team. The worksheets throughout are intended to be returned to over time, not completed once and forgotten.

A note on language: throughout this guide, ‘team’ refers to any group of people who work together toward shared goals — this includes project teams, departments, clinical teams, remote teams, and leadership groups.

A note on professional support: creating genuine cultural change in a team or organisation can be challenging and sometimes requires external support. Sunny Coast Counselling offers EAP services, workplace wellbeing training, and individual counselling for employees and managers.
