Managing Conflict at Work

Managing Conflict at Work Cover

A practical guide for employees and managers navigating difficult workplace relationships

Workplace conflict is one of the most common — and most difficult — challenges people face in their working lives. Whether you are in the middle of a difficult situation with a colleague right now, managing a team where tension has built up, or simply trying to build your skills for the future, this guide is for you.

Conflict at work is not inherently bad. Handled well, it can surface important problems, strengthen relationships, and lead to better outcomes for everyone involved. Handled poorly, it can damage health, morale, productivity, and careers. The difference lies largely in how conflict is understood and responded to.

This guide draws on evidence-based frameworks including the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, assertiveness training, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and psychological safety research. It is designed for both individual employees and managers or team leaders.

You do not need to read it from cover to cover. Use the contents to find the sections most relevant to your current situation. The worksheets throughout are designed to be completed and returned to over time.

A note on professional support: this guide is educational and is not a substitute for individual counselling, workplace mediation, or legal advice. If your situation involves bullying, harassment, discrimination, or a formal grievance, please seek appropriate professional and/or HR support. Sunny Coast Counselling offers individual counselling and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services for organisations and their employees.
